Biography

Joe represents companies and individuals in complex litigation and arbitration. Clients rely on Joe's advice, broad perspective, and vigorous advocacy. He approaches each case from his client's viewpoint, never losing sight of the broader business and personal context in which litigation arises.

Joe has accumulated deep experience in a wide range of high-stakes litigation, including cases involving securities fraud, closely held company and partnership disputes, post-merger and acquisition litigation, business torts such as unfair trade practices and tortious interference, and breach of contract. Joe also represents nonprofit and for-profit entities in property tax appeals.

Joe has successfully represented a financial services company in a securities class action, a technology company that was owed milestone and royalty payments under an asset purchase agreement, the majority owner of a portfolio of closely held companies accused of breach of fiduciary duty, an executive who was denied bonus payments by his former company, a broker-dealer who was sued by victims of a Ponzi scheme, a global pharmaceutical company in a product liability suit, and a bank facing multiple lawsuits stemming from Bernard Madoff's historic fraud.

Joe represents clients across many industries, including finance, health care, technology, pharmaceuticals, consumer products, franchise, and insurance. Joe was named a "Future Star" by Benchmark Litigation and named to its inaugural "Under 40 Hot List," recognized as a "New Leader in the Law" by Connecticut Law Tribune, and selected by New England Super Lawyers in the area of business litigation.

Joe is Co-chair of the Securities Litigation Subcommittee of the American Bar Association's Commercial & Business Litigation Committee, and he is on the editorial board of the Committee's quarterly newsletter. Joe also serves on the Executive Committee of the New Haven County Bar Association and is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association's Federal Practice Section and the New Haven Inn of Court.

Joe also devotes significant time to pro bono service. He works with the Connecticut Veterans Legal Center, has represented an indigent inmate in a civil rights lawsuit against prison officials for facilitating a gang attack, and obtained asylum for a Sudanese refugee.

Joe clerked at the Connecticut Supreme Court for Justice Christine S. Vertefeuille and at the U. S. District Court for the District of Washington, D. C. for Judge Richard W. Roberts.

He graduated with honors from the University of Connecticut School of Law, where he was an Articles Editor for the Connecticut Law Review. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa.
