Career Opportunities
The late 1990's are boom times for the legal profession, with expanding job opportunities for young lawyers at huge firms in major cities throughout the United States. Why, then, should you want to come to Wiggin & Dana, a firm of about 141 lawyers with offices in New Haven, Stamford and Hartford, Connecticut? Three main reasons:
  • Responsibility for substantial matters, early in your career, working directly with top-notch lawyers and with clients at the forefront of interesting industries
  • Freedom from the hierarchies, office politics and sharp elbows that often afflict large law firms
  • The ability to strike a sensible balance among work, family and community and recreational activities
Excellence at the Craft: Wiggin & Dana partners, many of whom are nationally recognized leaders in their fields, work on matters of great importance to some of the nation's preeminent corporations, professional firms, health care providers and educational institutions. Unlike many mega-firms, moreover, we understand that bloated staffing is uneconomical, impedes effective representation of the client's interests, and steepens the learning curve for young lawyers. Because the firm believes in lean staffing, young associates work directly with some of the best lawyers in America, assume major responsibilities early in their careers, and are thus better able to learn their craft.

A Collegial Culture: In this highly competitive era, many large law firms have been unable or unwilling to maintain an atmosphere of collegiality or shared purpose. Just as firms must compete with other firms for clients, lawyers too often are forced to compete with their own partners for business and compensation; associates, rather than supporting each other, compete for plum assignments and the attention of influential partners; and the civility so important to enjoyment of our profession is often lost. This has not happened at Wiggin & Dana and the firm is committed to ensuring that it does not.

The Balance of Work and Life: In the law, like any other serious discipline, there is no substitute for hard work and dedication. To become excellent at their craft, all young lawyers must put in long hours for many years. Successful Wiggin & Dana associates are no exception, and our partners continue to lead by example in this regard. However, Wiggin & Dana lawyers work only as much as necessary to serve our clients' interests. They do not work for work's sake; to impress the boss; or because they do not know how else to spend their time. Work is a source of personal growth and great satisfaction for our partners and associates, but it does not consume them, and they are therefore able to nurture strong family lives, participate actively as leaders of their communities, and pursue recreational interests.
