Connecticut Appellate Advocacy Institute
The Connecticut Appellate Advocacy Institute will take place from Sunday, April 25, through Tuesday, April 27, at the CBA Law Center in New Britain. Participants will work in small groups under the tutelage of a distinguished faculty that features leading appellate judges and lawyers in Connecticut.
The Institute co-chairs are Wesley W. Horton and Kimberly A. Knox, both of Horton Shields & Knox PC of Hartford. The faculty includes three Connecticut Supreme Court Justices: Chief Justice William J. Sullivan, and Justices David M. Borden and Peter T. Zarella. Five Appellate Court judges are also on the faculty: Chief Judge William J. Lavery and Judges Thomas A. Bishop, Alexandria Davis DiPentima, Anne C. Dranginis and C. Ian McLachlan.
The three-day program will feature a series of participatory exercises. Lawyers who attend will perform the necessary components of oral appellate advocacy, from the initial client conference to oral argument in the Supreme Court. They will receive high-quality coaching to improve their skills. Participants will have the chance to work with and learn from Connecticut Supreme Court Justices, Appellate Court Judges and experienced appellate lawyers with varying styles and philosophies. Faculty members will offer tips on what is effective and how a lawyer can be more effective.
