Wiggin and Dana Franchise Attorney Promoted to Partner

January 4, 2016

Wiggin and Dana is pleased to announce that John Doroghazi was promoted to Partner on January 1, 2016. John is a member of the Litigation Department and the Franchise and Distribution Practice Group.

In his commercial litigation practice, John represents franchisors in all types of franchise-related litigation, and has obtained successful results for franchisor clients in a wide-variety of cases brought by franchisees and members of the consuming public against franchisors. John routinely handles all facets of franchise litigation, such as drafting and arguing dispositive motions, enforcing arbitration clauses on behalf of signatories and non-signatories, crafting case strategy, managing discovery, conducting and defending depositions, negotiating settlements, and participating in trials and arbitrations. He has both first and second chair arbitration and trial experience, including being part of a team defending a franchisor in a multi-million dollar contract dispute arbitration.

John's other focus is defending both nationwide and state-specific consumer class actions for clients such as franchisors, insurance companies, hospitals, and financial service firms. He has published articles and been an invited speaker on the topic of defending franchisors against consumer class actions. He also has a deep knowledge of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), which imposes $500-1500 in statutory damages per each improper fax, telephone call, or text message. TCPA cases expose companies to potentially enormous liability and require a careful and creative defense. Due to his substantial class action and consumer protection experience, John works with clients in a variety of industries to assess their marketing practices and develop practical changes that minimize forward looking risk.

John graduated magna cum laude from Boston College in 2003, where he received his bachelor's degree in English and History. He received his J.D. magna cum laude in 2006 from Washington University School of Law, where he was an Articles Editor for the Washington University Law Quarterly. After law school, he was a law clerk to the Honorable Jean C. Hamilton, United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Missouri.

John is a member of the American Bar Association's Forum on Franchising, where he serves on the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Committee; the American Bar Association's Class Action and Derivative Suits Committee; the Connecticut Bar Association, where he serves as the Vice-Chair of the Franchise, Distributor & Dealer Section; and the New Haven County Bar Association, where he is the Co-Chair of the Nuts & Bolts Committee.

He joins an impressive and experienced team of Franchise Partners. Bethany Appleby and Dean Fournaris are co-chairs of the Franchise and Distribution Practice group, along with Partners and team members Erika Amarante and Kevin Kennedy.

Wiggin and Dana's Franchise and Distribution Group provides a wide range of services to franchisors and product manufacturers, including counseling companies on the initial decision to franchise, preparing franchise agreements and disclosure documents, negotiating with franchisees and suppliers, litigation and arbitration. In 2014, Chambers USA ranked Wiggin and Dana as one of the top five franchise practices in the United States. In addition, Wiggin and Dana lawyers consistently serve in leadership positions in the ABA Forum on Franchising and write and contribute to books and articles on franchising published by the ABA.
