The U.S. to Issue Electronic Registration Certificates

May 17, 2022

Francis J. Duffin

Joining many countries around the world, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will begin issuing (e-mailing) only electronic certificates of registration. While the change to electronic certificates had initially been slated to begin on June 7, 2022, on May 16th the USPTO advised that the rollout date for electronic certificates was being moved up to commence on May 24, 2022. As a result of the impending change to issuance solely of electronic certificates, the USPTO will not issue any certificates of registration between May 10 and May 23, 2022.

While the USPTO will routinely issue electronic certificates only, to the extent a registrant wants, or otherwise has need for, a printed “presentation copy” of a certificate of registration, a presentation copy may be ordered from the USPTO for the payment of a modest processing fee.
