Even A Vanished Man Has Rights

August 13, 2003

NY Daily News.com, originally published July 31, 2003

For more than a year, an American citizen named Jose Padilla has been held in solitary confinement in a U.S. naval prison in South Carolina.

He stands accused of planning to set off a radioactive “dirty bomb” in this country.

Unlike John Walker Lindh, the American Taliban who was captured while fighting U.S. forces in Afghanistan, Padilla was arrested thousands of miles away from any field of combat. He was detained at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport on May 8, 2002, as he got off a flight from Pakistan.
