Partner Paul Tuchmann Quoted in Law360 on Criminal Compliant Against Shohei Ohtani’s Former Interpreter

April 12, 2024

On April 11, 2024, Partner Paul Tuchmann was quoted in the Law360 article titled, “Feds Bring MLB’s Messy Betting Scandal Into Focus.”

Paul says the criminal complaint against Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtaniโ€™s former interpreter tells a very clear story, and that โ€œEven if a conspiracy theorist wanted to believe that Ohtani had been illegally betting and had paid Mizuhara to take the fall for Ohtani if/when the betting was discovered, it would be extremely unlikely that the two of them would have taken the step ahead of time of having Mizuhara pretend to be Ohtani on the phone with the bank, in case the betting was later discovered.โ€

Paul also notes “just how much Ohtani was at Mizuhara’s mercyโ€ due to Ohtaniโ€™s lack of proficiency with English, and that that while the allegations against Mizuhara are serious, he could attempt to curry favor with a judge by arguing that he carried out his acts because of a severe gambling addiction, and asking for leniency because he lacks a criminal record.
