Congressional Investigations
Wiggin and Dana offers an experienced team of attorneys to represent clients in congressional investigations and navigate the unique challenges such investigations present.
Our congressional investigations practice group has deep experience helping clients respond to every kind of congressional inquiry and demand, whether a letter request for information, a request for an interview by congressional committee staff, or a subpoena. We are also skilled in preparing clients for testimony at congressional hearings, and in managing the media scrutiny and associated reputational risks that often accompany congressional investigations.
Prior experience in conducting high-profile congressional oversight and ethics investigations enables our team to bring considerable insight and judgment to protecting the interests of our clients. Members of our congressional investigations practice have previously served as Senior Counsel to the Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, Deputy Minority Counsel to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Investigative Counsel to the House Committee on Ethics, Assistant to the Special Counsel for the 1997 House Ethics Reform Task Force, and Senior Associate Minority Counsel to the bipartisan House Task Force to Investigate Certain Allegations Concerning the Holding of American Hostages by Iran in 1980. Our clients are further advantaged by the experience of practice group members who have served as senior Executive Branch officials responsible for responding to congressional oversight and investigative demands.
Leveraging our team’s experience as former federal prosecutors, litigators, and criminal defense attorneys, we are also well-equipped to identify and troubleshoot parallel criminal, regulatory, or civil litigation risks which a congressional investigation may present.
Examples of our experience in assisting clients in congressional investigations include:
- Representing the Chief of Staff of a Member of Congress in an investigation by the House Ethics Committee regarding the misuse of official resources.
- Representing a Fortune 500 company in a congressional Investigation into alleged abusive labor practices in the provision of global logistics services.
- Successfully represented an undersecretary in congressional, criminal, and inspector general investigations.
