Wiggin Opportunity Initiative Marks Fifth Consecutive Year of Providing $1 Million in Free Legal Services to Emerging Businesses

July 17, 2025

Wiggin and Dana LLP today announced that, for the fifth consecutive year, the Wiggin Opportunity Initiative (WOI) has provided more than $1 million in free legal services. Marking the midpoint of the decade-long initiative, the milestone advances the firmโ€™s commitment to supporting entrepreneurial growth in the communities in which the firm operates.

Launched in July 2020, WOI addresses barriers to economic advancement by providing high-impact legal counsel to community-oriented small businesses that often lack access to critical support. Through this initiative, the firm committed to delivering $10 million in free legal services by 2030 and has already surpassed $5 million toward that goal in its first five years. With this ongoing ten-year commitment, Wiggin and Dana wishes to focus on the overall mission of working towards a more inclusive and equitable world.

โ€œWe believe that legal access is a vital foundation for entrepreneurial success and sustainable community development,โ€ said Managing Partner Tim Diemand. โ€œWe are proud to support business owners who are transforming their communities.โ€

WOI clients include a range of businesses, from technology startups to neighborhood-based service providers such as coffee shops and hair salons. By providing support on key issuesโ€”such as trademark registration, privacy, and corporate governanceโ€”WOI empowers these entrepreneurs who otherwise could not afford these services to build resilient businesses.

Notable program participants include the Folke Institute, a training and development, consulting and research company that enhances workforce capabilities; IVI Cosmetics, a hair care brand; Holmes Mouthwatering, a nutritious food company that also provides space for youth entrepreneurial mentoring; Knomee, an app developed for financial advisors and consumers to help identify their financial priorities; and Sprxng, a menstrual product developer. Each client represents a broader story of innovation, resilience, and local impact.

โ€œServices like patent and trademark filings are fundamental building blocks for protecting innovation and enabling growth,โ€ said John Doroghazi, WOI Chair and Partner at Wiggin and Dana. โ€œWOI is uniquely positioned to offer these essential tools to businesses that might otherwise go without, and we see the positive ripple effects in communities across the country.โ€

As demand for the program continues to grow, dozens of Wiggin and Dana attorneys have participated in WOI matters. WOI has also become a proving ground for junior attorneys at the firm, offering leadership opportunities and meaningful client exposure early in their careers.
