Alan is a Partner in Wiggin and Danaโs Litigation Department and International Trade Compliance Practice Group, bringing over 30 years of in-house compliance experience, including serving as Chief Compliance Officer for one of the worldโs largest aerospace and defense companies.
Clients turn to Alan when confronting their most serious compliance challenges, such as U.S. government enforcement actions, geopolitically sensitive acquisitions or divestitures, or compliance program overhauls while subject to government scrutiny. Alan benefits not only from his years of practical in-house experience but also from his extensive dealings with U.S. government regulators, as demonstrated by his current service as a State Department-appointed Special Compliance Officer (Monitor) for a Fortune 100 global manufacturer.
An experienced leader of cross-functional teams across multiple global organizations and sectors, Alan helps clients solve complex existential problems and navigate challenging trade and regulatory risks in an increasingly challenging regulatory environment. He has effectively overseen compliance efforts and led third-party monitor teams and multiple audits to ensure adherence to consent agreements and regulatory requirements and ensure compliance with U.S. government requirements; served as a trusted third-party monitor for large companies under CFIUS national security agreements; and led multiple significant audits of companies operating under U.S. Government consent agreements and national security agreements.
As Vice President and Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer of the Raytheon Company, Alan led a cross-functional team to design and implement a world-class international trade compliance program. He navigated the challenging landscape of an ITAR consent agreement with the U.S. State Department and enhanced Raytheonโs international trade and compliance programs. Alan also played a key role in overhauling Raytheonโs privacy program to meet European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) standards.
Throughout his career, Alan has held various in-house executive legal roles for the United Technologies family of companies, including Pratt & Whitney, Hamilton Sundstrand, and Otis Elevator. As Vice President of Global Trade Compliance for Sikorsky Aircraft, Alan established an industry-leading and sustainable international trade compliance function to ensure that Sikorsky successfully met stringent U.S. government expectations under ITAR consent and deferred prosecution agreements.
Alanโs practice experience extends beyond aerospace and defense companies to new and emerging companies. He is particularly skilled at guiding emerging companies through a range of complicated regulatory regimes including AB/AC compliance, trade compliance and CFIUS regulations, including in M&A transactions and through periods of high growth, multiple funding rounds, and ultimate sale or public listing.
Beyond his legal and corporate experience, Alan is a sought-after speaker at industry events, sharing insights on compliance strategies, regulatory policy, and business ethics. He has participated as a panel member in prestigious seminars such as the Society of International Affairs on international trade compliance, the American Conference Instituteโs FCPA conference, the Practising Law Instituteโs compliance seminars, and Cambridge Forumโs Defense Trade forum and Chief Compliance Officers forum.
