Wiggin and Dana's Appellate Practice Group is a dedicated appellate boutique within a larger law firm. Operating nationwide, the group handles high-stakes appeals and provides appellate advice and analysis of complex legal issues at the trial level. Though it often goes head-to-head with appellate litigators at the nation's largest law firms, the group is based in New Haven, allowing it to represent clients more cost-effectively than its typical large-firm competitor. In recent years, the group has handled appeals in virtually every federal circuit court and in state courts from California to Connecticut, Illinois to Florida, and many states in between.
Legal 500 recently named our Appellate Practice Group as one of the best in the U.S. for litigation in courts of appeal, putting it in the same company as some of the most-respected firms in the world. Wiggin and Dana is the only cited regional firm that is not based in Washington, D.C.
We are also retained by clients seeking counsel on particularly difficult or unsettled legal issues, not only on appeal, but also at both the trial level and before litigation has occurred.
Benchmark has reported that the Wiggin and Dana Appellate Practice Group is "the gold standard appeals practice in the state," basing that determination on interviews with Wiggin and Dana's clients and competitors. The Best Lawyers in America has recognized three of the group's lawyers—more than any other Connecticut-based-firm—in the Appellate field every year since 2006. Benchmark and Super Lawyers regularly recognize those same three, with Benchmark naming them Second Circuit "stars." The group includes a lawyer named to Benchmark's 2017 nationwide "Under 40 Hotlist in Litigation," two who teach an appellate clinic at Yale Law School, one who served as Chief of Appeals for a U.S. Attorney's office, and two who author the widely read Supreme Court Update, lauded by Lincoln Caplan in American Justice 2016.
